Acne is a serious problem for many of us; these pesky tiny bumps can spread everywhere on your arms, neck, back, and chest. There is no relief if acne is the bane of your existence. We get uncomfortable; it is painful, upsetting, and not at all good to look at.

But for some, the reason for acne or pimples is not solely heredity or unhealthy diet, but dandruff. Yes, dandruff and acne are related, though there may not always be a necessary connection between them. Dandruff, which is a layman’s term when it appears as fine flakes on the scalp; it’s not really harmful at that stage.

However, when it becomes severe, we call it seborrhoeic dermatitis (wet dandruff) – white flakes causing severe itching in your scalp region as well as all around the hairline. This may lead to boils, rashes, and a lot of irritation. The situation worsens when dandruff causes pimples.

Most of the time, dandruff can be controlled through home cures, but in extreme cases of seborrhoeic dermatitis, it is best to consult a dermatologist.

Can dandruff cause acne?

Can dandruff cause acne?

Let’s try to understand this: in our teens, there’s a lot of sebum production happening in the sebaceous glands. The sebum comes out on the skin surface through the opening of the sebaceous gland. These glands are present on the face as well as on your scalp.

Each gland is connected to a hair, so the sebum comes onto the scalp, coats your hair and the scalp surface. When there’s a lot of sebum production, it’s acted upon by a fungus that produces dandruff.

Collectively, as we mentioned, dandruff is a very fine flake on the scalp, formed mainly because your scalp skin is a very active environment and produces skin cells continuously; they die out regularly. But if the scalp is too oily, the skin cells collect and mix with the oil to form those white flakes that fall off your head when you have dandruff.

When it becomes bad, it causes some inflammation on the skin; when we have excess sebum production, we tend to have more dandruff. This excess sebum production, as I had pointed out earlier, would also lead to acne because of the blockage of the opening of the sebaceous duct.

It’s not necessary that if you have dandruff, you need to have acne, but chances are that you may have both acne and dandruff together.

Our skin is somewhat acidic in nature, which is a good sign because it kills all the harmful bacteria and infections on the skin.

The pH of the scalp skin is slightly off to basic for those people who suffer from dandruff, it might not be as acidic as it should be, but many anti-dandruff products help to get their skin pH right. These products help make the scalp a little more acidic, and there they get most in use. You can try them out if you have an oily dandruff scalp.

Another method is a good home remedy. Try lemon to fight your dandruff, as it has antibacterial properties, mixed with apple cider vinegar for dandruff to balance the pH level and a little bit of water, on your scalp for 20-30 minutes and wash it off with mild hot water; it cleanses your scalp. It works the same way as curd or lemon do to get clean and dandruff free hair.

Take care of your environment because dandruff is an infection. Keep your pillow covers regularly cleaned. On several occasions, the dandruff problem returns despite people using anti-dandruff products because they don’t take care of the environment, which is still dandruff infested.

Take off your pillowcase, combs, headgear, caps, brushes, hair clips, and keep them in an antiseptic solution for almost half the day. That’s how you get rid of dandruff.

2. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo to reduce dandruff in your scalp:

It is highly recommended to use an anti-dandruff shampoo for washing your hair as it helps remove the flakiness of the scalp and cleanses off grime and dirt.

Anti-dandruff shampoos contain ketoconazole, the active ingredient that helps you fight dandruff and prevent the recurrence of dandruff.

3. Using fewer hair products can help control dandruff flakes and an itchy scalp:

A lot of people suffer from dandruff due to the overuse of hair products. When you’re applying your hair product, which may be serums, clays, creams, wax, or gels, take care of not using it on the scalp but just on the body of your hair. If these products come in contact with the scalp, it may intensify the dandruff problem.

4. Use hot oils to massage your scalp, it soothes your scalp and fights dandruff:

Hot oil massage for the scalp will loosen the dead skin and relax you. If your scalp gets too dry, that adds to the dead skin cells. Oil is like fertilizer for your scalp. It improves the blood circulation to the scalp, keeping the scalp healthier. If you want to oil your hair, make sure you do it at least two to three times a week, but no more than that.

So while dandruff and acne each are caused by a different reason, both are provoked by an excess of oil production. That’s why many people encounter acne and dandruff at the same time- since both can be related to hormonal changes that increase oil production, like those that happen during puberty.

It is advisable to not self-medicate listening to the advice of the salon people, or others; instead, visit a dermatologist.
