Dating During COVID 19 Lockdown

The COVID 19 lockdown has created an almost unprecedented situation wherein the entire country has been forced indoors. This forced isolation can cause you to feel lonely, more so if you are single. Having a significant other or even someone to talk to can make it easier for you to get through the COVID crisis.

Dating is not easy, even under normal circumstances. It is a delicate dance, especially now in the digital age. However, the silver lining here is that, even though the covid lockdown has you relegated to your home, you can give online dating an honest shot. Chances are that you fall in one of three broad categories, given the current situation. Let’s look at which group you’re in and what it might mean for you.

1. You are in a relationship and are quarantining with your partner

If you and your partner are quarantining together, then things are mostly sorted for you. Mostly. You get to spend quality time with your partner, which often becomes difficult given the stress of everyday life. It might be an excellent opportunity to rekindle the spark of your relationship. However, a word of caution to the wise, there can be such a thing as spending too much time together.

Being around one person all the time can have its challenges. The covid lockdown requires that you stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary to go out. This might result in you or your partner not getting enough space, stepping on each other’s toes more often than not; which may eventually lead to conflict.

Believe it or not, cases of divorce in China and Turkey are on the rise ever since the imposition of the coronavirus lockdown there. Therefore, taking time out for yourself and giving your partner space as well, becomes very important. The best way to do this is to communicate with one another, set personal boundaries, and eventually, you will find your groove.

2. You are dating someone but are separated by the covid lockdown

If you are dating someone, whether you have been dating for a while or have just started dating, this time presents a unique opportunity. Yes, you do not get to see each other or meet, but that does not mean that you cannot deepen your connection. You can choose to keep in touch virtually, through video calls, text messages or phone calls.

All relationships take on an identity of their own, and it is easy to get swept up. This is a great time to ground yourself. The distance might give you a chance to reconnect with who you are outside of the relationship. This can be a huge growth opportunity for both of you.

If you have just started seeing each other and it is rather new, the distance can be a good excuse to talk more and get to know each other better. Think about love stories of old and how writing letters to each other helped lovers bond better. Always remember that absence makes the heart grow fonder. The more difficult the separation is, the more fulfilling the reunion shall be. Let the covid lockdown bring you and your loved ones closer.

3. You are single during the covid lockdown

Being single during the coronavirus lockdown can become challenging for several reasons, such as feeling lonely, not having an active friend circle or social group, and so on. This is where a significant perk of the digital age, online dating comes into the picture.

Dating apps have made it easier than ever to get in touch with and hopefully make a connection with someone special. Apps like Tinder are offering free features such as ‘Passport’, which allows you to match and talk with people around the world, in case you do not connect with the people in your vicinity. This is as good a time as any to try your luck at online dating. Just because you can’t travel physically because of the covid lockdown, does not mean you can’t meet people from the comfort of your own home.

Whether you choose to date someone or not, make sure you are taking good care of yourself during this covid lockdown. Online dating can become stressful in situations such as the other person not being as responsive as you want them to be, or conversations fizzling out because they don’t lead anywhere. Be patient. The most important rules for online dating are learning how to manage expectations and creating healthy boundaries.

Just because you are stuck at home because of the covid lockdown, does not mean that your love life has to suffer. Use the technology at your disposal and make the most of this unique albeit challenging time.
